Jill's Pick: Blessed Unrest![]() Paul Hawken's Blessed Unrest provides a welcome and hopeful addition to contemporary environmental literature. The premise simply stated, is that though often overshadowed by the gloominess of the current state of the world (i.e. unchecked global warming, rampant poverty, persistent violence and racism) countless groups across the globe have been organizing and fighting for the interdependent causes of social and environmental justice. When viewed together, these people represent the largest movement in human history, and accordingly, immense potential for correcting the global injustices we face. Hooray! But you'll have to work for it. The 111 page appendix of essential movement terms combined with the in-depth introduction and history of our current environmental movement, makes this book a brilliant resource for readers just beginning to explore social and environmental justice as well as for well-seasoned activists. One tip: Copies of the book were distributed at the GreenBuild Conference, where Hawken spoke last November, so you may want to check with a colleague for a copy before placing a hold at the library. About Jill: With a background in Art History and Mathematics from Lewis & Clark College, Jill DeCoursey works as a training and project coordinator for Green Building Services. Jill plays an integral role in the development and design of a wide variety of GBS workshops and educational sessions. She is also a reviewer for the US Green Building Council's Education Provider Program. Jill’s versatility and exceptional analytical skills contribute to her success as both the training coordinator in the marketing group and project coordinator with the design and construction teams. « newsletter front page |
